The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will be hosting a 2-day in-person ‘Train the Trainer’ event for providers of Inpatient Rehabilitation Facilities (IRFs) and Long-Term Care Hospitals (LTCHs) on June 9 and 10, 2020, at the Lord Baltimore Hotel, 20 W Baltimore St., Baltimore, MD 21201. This event will be open to all IRF and LTCH providers, associations, and organizations. Online attendees are invited to participate remotely using Slido (see below).
This 'Train-the-Trainer’ event is part of a comprehensive strategy to ensure IRF and LTCH providers have access to the education needed to understand and comply with changes in reporting requirements associated with the IRF and LTCH Quality Reporting Programs (QRPs). This includes revisions to the Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility—Patient Assessment Instrument (IRF-PAI), and the Long-Term CARE Data Set (LCDS) effective October 1, 2020.
For a preview of upcoming changes to the IRF-PAI and LTCH CARE Data Set, along with details about the full range of training options available to providers, please use the following link to access the SPADES: A Preview of Upcoming Changes to PAC QRP Requirements.
The full event agenda is available below. Use the tabs to switch between day 1 and day 2 agendas.
In this session, we briefly introduce the day's expert speakers and provide a short orientation to Slido, the interactive application we will be using throughout the conference. Both online and in-person participants will be responding to polls and asking questions using Slido.
There are a number of changes on the horizon for PAC providers. Join Lorraine Wickiser from CMS as she summarizes the SPADEs identified for revision as well as the new items included in the assessment instruments for IRF and LTCH, effective October 1, 2020.
Jordan Luke from the Office of Minority Health and Teresa Mota from Abt Associates team up to co-present this session which will provide you with an overview of social determinants of health and why it is important to collect and report this data. This will be followed by a discussion on the standardized patient assessment data elements that have been adopted across post-acute care settings, the guidance related to the completion of these data elements, and engagement of learners in coding of practice scenarios to apply knowledge.
Managing pain is an important part of clinical care because unmanaged pain can cause suffering, social withdrawal, depressed mood and functional decline, and, therefore, decrease quality of life. Join Brenda Karkos of Abt Associates as she describes the intent and coding guidance of the pain interview including data elements related to pain interference with sleep, therapy, and day-to-day activities and provides an opportunity to practice knowledge application with coding practice scenarios.
Cognitive changes in a patient can have a significant impact on their recovery and healing yet can be difficult to detect. Utilizing the Brief Interview for Mental Status (BIMS) and the Confusion Method Assessment (CAM©) to determine cognitive patterns is key in care plan development and identifying correct interventions.
There are many services provided in post-acute care, including treatments, procedures, and programs, which can have a profound effect on an individual’s health status, self-image, dignity, and quality of life. In this session, Ellen Strunk with Acumen will review the standardized patient assessment data elements associated with these post-acute care services. Providers will also have an opportunity to demonstrate their learning with some challenging practice scenarios.
In this session, we briefly introduce the day's expert speakers and provide a short orientation to Slido, the interactive application we will be using throughout the conference . Both online and in-person participants will be responding to polls and asking questions using Slido.
Mood distress is a serious condition that is often underdiagnosed and undertreated in the PAC setting. Depression can be associated with psychological and physical distress impacting a patient’s independence and participation in therapy. Join us as we review strategies to detect these symptoms utilizing the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-2 to 9) including illustrative video examples of these approaches.
Alternative methods of receiving nutrition can diminish an individual’s sense of dignity and diminish pleasure from eating in some circumstances even if the patient benefits from these alternative methods. In this session, we will lead participants through the various nutritional approaches, including the intent of the data element, coding instructions, and definitions. Participants will also be provided with practice scenario opportunities to check their understanding of how to collect and code this data.
Medications are an integral part of the care provided to patients. However, there are some medications that are considered high-risk due to side effects that can adversely affect health, safety, and quality of life. Brenda Karkos of Abt Associates will provide participants with the list of medications that are included in the high-risk drug classes data element as well as the intent of the data element, coding instructions, and practice coding scenarios to help participants check their knowledge.
Section GG has been included in the PAC assessment instruments for some time now, and there are some minor changes for FY2020. The biggest challenge that many facilities face is training new staff on this fundamental part of the data set. Do you know of the training resources from CMS that are available to help support your efforts? Exploring the Quality Reporting Program Training webpages for IRF and LTCH, we will identify the training and courses available to supplement your educational endeavors for Section GG.
Application of knowledge is the best way to affirm understanding. Join us for this capstone presentation of a complex patient case study that allows you to apply your knowledge of the data elements discussed during the two-day training.
Our speakers represent a mix of clinicians, researchers, and analysts, along with leaders representing the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) directly.
Whether you're attending in-person or streaming online, all audience members are invited to participate in real-time by responding to polls, asking questions, and by letting us know which questions you would most like to see us answer.
Be sure to setup your profile during the event.
For this training, we've partnered with the Lord Baltimore Hotel in Baltimore, MD.
Registration for the in-person training is limited to 250 people on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you were unable to secure an in-person registration, please consider participating virtually via webcast.
